OVER 400,000 is being given to Newham Council by the government to help bolster the borough’s flood defences.

The funding is part of 21 million worth of grants to councils around the country announced by Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman.

Under the move, Newham Council is being allocated 146,800 for flood defences in 2011/12 with a further 276,100 for following years.

The money will go towards council responsibilities under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, which include flood mapping, producing risk management plans and supporting community flood awareness groups.
