Smoke issuing from a manhole is causing traffic chaos around East Ham town centre this morning with cars and buses being diverted as the fire Brigade are kept waiting for engineers to repair an underground electrical unit.
Drastic action needs to be taken said a crewman at East Ham fire station because there is a danger that of a power blast. “I hear it’s mayhem out there,” he added.
It was at 5.30 am that crews were alerted to the incident at Barking Road close to Ron Leighton Way, a major junction. Since then they have been waiting for an engineer to make the electrical facility safe.
