The beginning of a new term has been delayed at a West Ham primary school after its roof was damaged by a major fire on Saturday morning.
Children at Gainsborough Primary School, which sprawls across Milner Road and Gainsborough Road, were due to return to school today but it is still unclear when lessons will resume.
Six engines and around 30 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze at 10.15am which was brought under control around two hours later.
Most of the school was untouched thanks to the rapid response of firefighters who restricted the damage to the roof and one classroom said a senior officer at Plaistow fire station. He also praised the actions of the school caretaker who was on hand to give the firefighters access to the school.
Firefighters from Plaistow, Stratford and Poplar attended the scene.
London Fire Brigade said that the cause of the fire is under investigation and Newham Council experts confirmed that they are undertaking a full investigation.
