Three NewVIc college students are being trained up to work as mentors and role models in schools and communities.
Sadika Begum, Iqra Abdi and Nora Muhumed have made it on to the City Year charity programme for 2012/13.
They applied to join the scheme after meeting workers at the Plaistow college’s annual employment fair.
Iqra, 18, from Plaistow, said: “Being raised in a deprived borough many children need someone to talk to about the struggle they face and I could be that guide for them.
“I want to open children’s eyes to the opportunities around them and to help give them ambition.”
The application process is tough with five children applying for every one place.
City Year chief executive Sophie Livingstone added: “We only choose young people that are exceptional in their commitment and attitude to transforming the lives of children.
“Sadika, Iqra and Nora have demonstrated they have a passion for helping children so its great to welcome them to the City Year family.”
