Four fire crews were called to a blaze at a restaurant from which two people were forced to flee.
It took 20 firefighters from Stratford, Barking and Ilford stations more than half an hour to bring the blaze at Tamarind Indian restaurant, High Street North, Manor Park, under control.
Poplar station manager Steve Hobbs, who attended the scene, said: “The fire damaged part of the restaurant and the roof, but crews worked quickly to get the fire under control and managed to prevent it from spreading any further.
“Early indications are that the fire started in the kitchen area of the restaurant.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
