They say it’s the taking part that counts but teenager Renee Cocker went one better after being named People’s Choice at the first ever Miss Teen Caribbean UK contest.
The 17-year-old from Forest Gate represented St Kitts and Nevis in the inaugural contest at the Brixton Academy on Saturday and was rewarded with a crown and trophy for her efforts.
“I was a bit surprised but it was good because it means that the public wanted me to win,” Renee, who lives in Eric Road, said.
“It has given me a bit of confidence and now I might do another contest.”
Her entry included wearing the St Kitts and Nevis national dress, showcasing her talent for writing poetry and taking part in a group salsa dance.
Renee, who is currently studying an NVQ in beauty therapy at the London College of Beauty Therapy, has previously said that she hopes to inspire the younger generation by taking part in the competition.
