The tragic death of actor Robin Williams last month demonstrates that, no matter who or how successful you are, mental health issues such as depression can affect anyone.

Research shows that most people with issues are afraid to talk to family, friends and their GP. Men in particular find it hard to talk about how they feel.

That’s why we’ve created online community the Big White Wall where people can express t feelings anonymously and get help.

The Big White Wall is a free, confidential website staffed 24-hours, seven days-a-week by trained counsellors, known as wall guides, who monitor posts and identify members who need help.

For those with high levels of stress and anxiety or are feeling very down, there is also a service in Newham called talking therapies.

Trained therapists can help you to gain or regain confidence, approach problems differently and get more out of life. Talking to a trained professional can help. In Newham talking therapies are offered by NHS East London Foundation Trust via an appointment with a GP or by calling 020 8475 8080.

You can also take steps yourself to prevent stress and anxiety getting too much. For everyone, there are things you can do to make sure you stay mentally healthy. These are called the ‘five ways to wellbeing’:

n Connect: talk to the people around you – family, friends, neighbours and colleagues

n Be active: exercise makes you feel good

n Take notice: be mindfully aware of the world around you, without becoming too emotionally involved.

n Keep learning: try something new or set a challenge you will enjoy achieving

n Give: do something nice for a friend or a stranger. Smile.

With Big White Wall and talking therapies there are services to help if things get too much.

But – like any health issue – it’s really important to act early so why not think about your wellbeing and make a positive change to your life now? More from Dr Zarifa
