New figures from the Met Police show that Newham has the second highest number of pedestrian victims of hit and runs last year.
Of the total of 57 people who were involved in collisions with vehicles that failed to stop, two died, six were seriously hurt and 49 sustained slight injuries.
Only Westminster was higher with 84 people who sustained fatal, serious or slight injuries while walking on the roads.
The figures also reveal that Newham is the fourth worst borough in London for victims of hit and run with 204 victims last year.
Jenny Jones, London Assembly Member, said: “It’s very worrying that Newham is in the top five worst boroughs in London for hit and run victims.
“Hit and runs are associated with other illegal activities such as drunk driving, speeding, being disqualified or simply having no insurance. I am particularly concerned that 57 pedestrians were the victims of hit and runs in just one borough.
“When a city has almost a fifth of its injuries from road collisions being linked to hit and runs, then the Mayor ought to be demanding that the police enforce the rules of the road.
“I am particularly shocked that over a thousand pedestrians could be victims of hit and runs in London last year and it isn’t regarded as a major scandal by the Mayor and senior officers in the Met Police.”
