Newham is one of the most diverse places in the country and Martin Marguerie loves to help make it easier for people to communicate.

The Project Coordinator for Speaking English with Confidence has already helped hundreds of people better their language skills.

Martin, 39, said it is “brilliant to help people” to learn English.

“I think Newham has been a really amazing and wonderful borough, all the people and organisations have really helped us get this project going,” he said.

“Newham College have a waiting list of 700 people, and it’s brilliant to be helping people and those who can’t travel far, or haven’t got the money.”

Martin, who manages the scheme, believes it’s success is down to the help given by local people and organisations.

“I was originally given eight boroughs to work with in East London and Newham was the most successful out of those.

“Because of that I started working with Active Newham and they soon introduced me to the libraries and Newham College, who have helped me recruit volunteers to help.”

There are now 85 volunteers helping Martin on his mission to teach people the nation’s language.
