Two leisure centres set for £1.6 million refurbishment

Balaam Leisure Centre, in Balaam Street, Plaistow, and Newham Leisure Centre, in Prince Regent Lane, will be closed temporarily while work is carried out.

When they reopen on January 2, they will both feature state-of-the-art equipment, revamped changing rooms and more space for members to work out.

Newham’s gym, female dry changing rooms, studios and creche are already closed, while the pool and wetside changing rooms will be shut from Sunday, December 17.

During the refurbishment, customers there will need to share the wet side changing rooms.

While work is being carried out, members will be able to visit East Ham Leisure Centre, Atherton Leisure Centre or Manor Park Fitness Centre and use any membership privileges they have as they would at their regular centre.

Those who continue their membership through this time are guaranteed a price freeze if they continue with their existing membership plan in January.

Cllr Forhad Hussain, cabinet member for sports and leisure, said: “The improvements to both leisure centres will ensure that our residents will have access to the most modern and up to date equipment and facilities.

“Newham Council believes in supporting our residents to stay fit and lead healthy lifestyles.”

As part of the refurbishments, Newham will gain new cardio and strength equipment for both able-bodied and disabled customers and the ground floor gym will be extended.

At dedicated times, the top floor of the gym will be dedicated to female members for women-only sessions.

At Balaam, every piece of equipment will be replaced and a new exercise station installed.

Members will be able to make the most of new classes taking place in a specially equipped hot yoga studio with room for 50 customers, and enjoy the gym 24 hours a day, with a duty manager on site from 10pm to 6am.
