Mo Diame apparently wants to join Liverpool, if you believe the quotes recently attributed to him.

The Senegal midfielder is reported to have said: “I can’t tell you if I will be a Liverpool player next season, but I think my name is still on their wanted list.”

At this point, West Ham fans might feel entitled to snigger just a little.

Many would assume that the Anfield club couldn’t have been watching Diame this season, given his disappointing form compared to last term.

In his first year at Upton Park, the midfielder impressed with a series of powerhouse performances as the Hammers comfortably secured a top-half finish.

This time around, however, as West Ham have struggled against the drop, his contribution couldn’t have been more underwhelming.

By his own admission, his campaign “started badly” and there were times before Christmas when he couldn’t even force his way into the team when Sam Allardyce was naming a six-man midfield.

Of late he’s been asked to play wide with Allardyce preferring to play Matt Taylor in central midfield – and when that’s the case you know you’ve got problems.

His goal in the recent win at Sunderland did at least see him improve on last season’s dismal tally of three.

But overall it’s been a below-par campaign from Diame and you have to wonder why Liverpool – who began the week as title favourites – would want to sign him.

That’s if they actually do, of course.

Maybe it’s more a case of Diame living in dreamland, believing he’s better than he really is and that his talents demand that he plays for one of the Premier League’s big boys.

Or maybe it’s that he’ll be relatively cheap, with just a year remaining on his existing contract.

Had he departed a year ago, Hammers fans would have been mourning the loss of another vital player.

If he does indeed leave in the summer, many will now think he’s easily replaced.

? West Brom’s draw against Spurs at the weekend means they have failed to win any of their seven home games since Pepe Mel took charge.

History suggests that when you’re looking to end a miserable run like that you ring up the Hammers for a game.

Guess who’s visiting the Hawthorns next…
