The Golden Fish in Dagenham’s Becontree Avenue has been crowned the borough’s best takeaway by an unlikely panel of judges.

London Fire Brigade made the announcement following a survey in support of its annual campaign to stamp out fires caused by cooking.

A spokesman for the Golden Fish said: “We’re clearly delighted to be recognised, once again, as the best fish and chip shop.

“In addition to providing award winning food, we can now say our chips save lives.

“Eating our chips has probably prevented numerous chip pan fires in the homes of east London over the past 40 years.”

The public was invited to vote for its favourite takeaway using the twitter tag #takeawaymap, and the top ranking food businesses have been placed on an interactive map.

Three-quarters of alcohol related fires are caused by cooking under the influence, the brigade said.

Commissioner Ron Dobson added: “Drunk cooking could lead you to remember this year’s Christmas party for all the wrong reasons.

“If people cook during the festive period under the influence of alcohol they could be putting themselves and the people they love in danger.”
