Street Tag launches around Mayesbrook Park this week offering participants the chance to win a prize worth up to £1,000.

The game challenges players to get more active and collect points by tapping their electronic fobs at various Street Tag boxes attached to lamp posts in their area. School children and their families who live near the park are being encouraged to walk, run or cycle between the ten special markers in an effort to top the leaderboard and win a brand new bicycle for each of their team members.

The competition will run for six weeks as a fun way to get the community moving, with prizes also available for teams finishing second, third and fourth.

The NHS suggests that young people aged between five and 18 should do an hour of physical activity each day, combining moderate and vigorous aerobic exercise and exercises to strengthen bones and muscles.

Cllr Maureen Worby, cabinet member for social care and health integration, said “This is an exciting opportunity to bring local people together to keep fit and healthy by encouraging friends and family to get out and about and explore the local area.”

Street Tag is a community health initiative in collaboration with DigiLab and Barking and Dagenham Council.

Seun Oshinaike from Digilab, which has worked alongside the council to provide the devices for Street Tag, said “We hope that trialling this scheme in the Mayesbrook ward is a success and could hopefully lead to it rolling out across the rest of the borough in the future.”

The launch of the game coincides with London’s Healthy Living Week. To find out more about adopting a healthier lifestyle, and for news on future Street Tag schemes and competitions in your area, visit newme.london
