A Beckton schoolboy has said he found passing GCSE maths at the age of 11 “easy”.

Jeremiah Cummings, 11, of Woodcocks, sat the exam in June and achieved a C grade, five years before the students typically take the test.

“I’ve always liked maths since I was three or four years old,” the young mathematician said.

“I find it interesting because there is nothing you can’t learn more about.

“It was challenging but I think that anything challenging is worth it because you have to overcome it and work on it because there is always an answer.”

Ably supported by his father Audie and mother Diane, Jeremiah started studying the syllabus for the exam when he was 10 and although it should take two years, he did it in one.

He said: “I found most of it easy like the mental arithmetic, graphs and even simultaneous equations but things like algebra were not so easy.

“I felt like if I did the test early I would know what to prove on when I did it later.”

Jeremiah dreams of becoming a doctor after his granddad died of a heart attack when he was eight and needs an A* grade to do so.

“I’m taking the test again next year and this time I think I’ll get it,” he said.

“I was so close to a B that if I work hard on a few things, I will get want I need.”

The King Solomon High student has been revelling in the acclaim from his class mates with some asking Jeremiah to do their maths sums for them.

But despite slight disappointment, Jeremiah is happy with what he did.

He said: “I finished the exam 30 minutes early and I thought that I might have got an A*.

“But when I got my results in August, I was a bit sad but happy because not many people get GCSE at 11.”

Proud parent Audie added: “We are extremely proud because we are aware of the work required to do this.

“Jeremiah is a year ahead of his contemporaries and has done something that is not often achieved.

“He’s ambitious and he wants to achieve more and once you have a motivation it can drive education.”
