Councillors helped the Indian community raise a flag to mark India Independence Day in Upton Park this month.

Around 200 people gathered outside the Upton Community Centre in Claude Road to raise the Indian national flag to commemorate the country’s annual day of independence.

The ICCAN Association put on a cultural programme featuring native music and songs as part of a summer party which Cllr Unmesh Desai, Cllr Rustambhai Talati, Cllr Nirmal Chhaya, and Cllr Joy Laguda attended.

Newham Council also held a ceremony on August 15 on the steps of Newham Town Hall, in Barking Road, East Ham, hosted by Cllr Christine Bowden.

She said: “We celebrate diversity in Newham and are very proud of the fact that so many communities live together in harmony.”
