Food, music and art are just some of the things guests can look forward to at the Rathbone Market Festival, taking place this weekend.

Residents are invited to come together at Rathbone Market Square, in Barking Road, to celebrate the revitalised Canning Town market.

During the event, illustration artist, Lewis Campbell, will be on hand developing a mural of artwork which aims to highlight the market’s heritage and how it has evolved over the years.

The mural, which will be temporarily displayed at the market as it continues to be developed, has been commissioned by Rosetta Art Centre.

Sanaz Amidi, Chief Executive at Rosetta Art Centre, said: “This project highlights the great history of Rathbone Market throughout its 52 years in Canning Town, its past before that, as well as its future.

“Art is a perfect way to engage with local people, as it brings different sections of the community together. The mural will be something the community can be proud of.”

Stratford East Singers will also attend the event to provide musical entertainment during the festival which is being led by English Cities Fund - a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal and General Property and the Homes and Communities Agency, who are responsible for the £180million redevelopment of the area.

Duncan Cumberland, ECf development director and head of the Rathbone Market Festival, said: “Cultural, vibrant events are exactly what we envisaged for the market square upon its completion. We want to put Canning Town firmly back on the map as a residential destination in East London.

“The redevelopment of Rathbone Market and events such as the Rathbone Market Festival, are set to breathe new life into this community. We are thrilled to be hosting this free community event bringing music, arts and culture to Canning Town this August.”

Councillor Ken Clark, cabinet member for building communities, public affairs, planning and regeneration, added: “We are pleased to be working with English Cities Fund to reestablish Rathbone Market.

“The market is the heart of the local area and we hope this festival will give residents and visitors to the area a taste of life in Canning Town and keep them coming back.”

Rathbone Market Festival, partnering up with Heart FM, will take place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9, August.
