Next week we will begin moving families who need them into temporary homes on the Carpenters Estate. We would like to have moved many more into other properties last year, including the three high rise blocks, had we not been legally blocked from doing so. Since the council regained possession of the illegally occupied block, officers have been carrying out repairs to make the homes safe and suitable for families to move in as soon as possible.
It has been a huge couple of weeks for the future of our country and I believe there is a big lesson for us all to take from what has happened.
This week, free school meals for pupils in reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are extended across England. Many heads have already spoken to the media about the challenges of implementing the scheme with a lack of Government support.
London’s housing crisis is never out of the headlines.
When I walk down East Ham or Stratford high streets and see more and more money lenders, pawn brokers and hire purchase stores, it makes me furious. These shops are charging almost laughable rates of interest, except there is nothing funny about the impact they have.
I am looking forward to welcoming Newham residents, with family and friends, to the Mayor’s Newham Show next weekend, (July 12 - 13, from noon to 6pm). In Central Park, East Ham, we’ll come together for a free weekend of fun, activities and high quality entertainment.
I was delighted so many residents, partners and council staff joined councillors and me at our annual meeting last Thursday. I thanked the people of Newham for putting their trust in me and our councillor team for the next four years.
Residents have the opportunity tomorrow (Thursday) to use their vote. A basic and fundamental right for everyone in our society, it is worth carefully considering the issues, the candidates and their policies before voting for Newham Mayor, local councillors and the European Parliament.
On May 22, Newham residents have the opportunity to vote in elections for your local councillors, a Mayor of Newham and for a Member of the European Parliament.
