Meet the East Ham dancers full of joy and expectation. The troupe from the Deborah Day Theatre School has won through to the Grand Final of the Glee Club Challenge where they will strut their stuff at the Indigo O2 Arena next month.
They have a chance to win a share of £5,000 in prizes in the contest run by the Jack Petchey Foundation.
The group of girls and boys is one of three winners from the London regional final held at Stratford Circus where eight groups – a total of 180 performers – took centre stage. Now in its second year the contest is designed to find the best groups of young musical talent and involves schools, youth clubs, drama and dance groups, even those just starting out.
All finalists attended “boot-camp” workshops with a professional singing coach and choreographer to help develop their skills.
The nine winners will contest the final judged by Graham Norton, Tamzin Outhwaite and new judge Brenda Edwards, currently playing Killer Queen in the West End’s We Will Rock You and former X Factor finalist.
Newham’s Deborah Day Theatre School is based at the Hartley Centre, Barking Road. A spokesman: “We are thrilled! We learnt so much from the process last year and are relishing that opportunity again.”
