Skyfall has become the most popular film of the year and the highest grossing James Bond movie so far in the UK.
In less than a fortnight the 23rd 007 outing has taken £57 million at the country’s cinemas, surpassing the previous record for Casino Royale set in 2006 with £55.6 million.
Until now the biggest cinema hit of the year in the UK had been Batman movie The Dark Knight.
Producer Barbara Broccoli said: “We are thrilled and proud to reach this box office landmark in record time and are delighted that UK audiences continue to enjoy Skyfall.”
The film sees Bond on the trail of warped villain Raoul Silva, played by Javier Bardem, as he wreaks havoc on MI6 in an effort to even a score with M, played by Dame Judi Dench.
The comedian Eddie Izzard has hit out at London Mayor Boris Johnson whilst maintaining he is ready for the challenge of pursuing politics himself.
