Young fencers star in tournament

Newham Swords members won three medals at the Great Britain under-17 and under-20 Championships last weekend, including gold for Kamal Minott.

The under-17 international successfully defended his national title with victory over Salle Kiss Fencing Club’s Daniel Kiss, who is Great Britain’s number one ranked fencer.

It was an outstanding achievement by Minott and Katrina Feklistova followed the success of her Newham Swords and international team-mate by winning bronze in the under-17 girls’ event with a career best.

The third medal for Newham Swords came in the under-20 boys’ event, which featured Rajan Rai. He took the bronze medal after losing to overall winner George Hendrie from Chichester Fencing Club.

There was one more outstanding result for Newham Swords as 14-year-old Rachel Shaw finished seventh in the under-17 girls’ event – an immense achievement from the Lister student.

Swords head coach Pierre Harper was delighted, saying: “We are so proud of these performances.”

And club manager Linda Strachan added: “These performances have been brought about by sheer hard work and determination throughout the fencing season.”

Minott, Feklistova, Rai and Shaw will now prepare for the British Youth Championships Finals, taking place in Sheffield in May.
