Chobham Academy picked up a prestigious award during the Youth Sport Trust’s 2014 Conference for their innovative development of international practice in developing independent learning in PE.

The school won the Youth Sport Trust’s ‘Excellence in Secondary Physical Education Award’, during a ceremony held at Telford International Centre, recognising and rewarding best practice and achievements through PE and sport by schools, colleges and young people.

On stage to present Chobham Academy with their prestigious award were Baroness Sue Campbell CBE, Chair of the Youth Sport Trust, Youth Sport Trust Ambassador Gail Emms, and Chris Blackburn, CEO of Sporting Nation.

Ben Starkey, Director of Learning PE at Chobham Academy said: “Opening in September gave us a real blank canvas to adopt a way of excelling students, and we did that through the use of SOLO (structure of observed learning outcomes) taxonomy in PE.

“Winning this award is an incredible achievement, and helps get our name out there. As part of the Olympic legacy, we want to show people that the legacy lives on their doorstep.”

The school will receive a visit from Olympic silver medallist badminton player Emms.

The Youth Sport Trust National Conference, which is sponsored by Technogym, had over 500 headteachers and school sport professionals attending.

A number of workshops and mini key note speeches featured discussion on the key issues in the PE and school sport sector, including a focus on how schools make maximum use of the Government’s £150m a year investment for primary schools.
