The worlds oldest gay rugby club – Kings Cross Steelers – were crowned European champions for the third time after winning the Union Cup.

The biennial tournament held in Amsterdam at the weekend, saw the West Ham-based club win the XVs section and the second team come runners-up in the Xs.

In a gripping final, the Steelers beat their old rivals, Manchester Spartans 29-0.

The Steelers X won the runners-up section against the Parisian side Le Coq Festif.

The French put out an impressive defence, but eventually the London side won by 27-7.

Eleven teams from the UK, Ireland and the continent played in two levels of competition, with new teams from Europe including Straffe Ketten from Brussels, Belgium and Dark Horses from Lisbon, Portugal.

Chairman of the Steelers, Tim Sullivan was delighted: “This is a thrilling triumph for the world’s first gay rugby club,” he said.

“Our success has been due to the sheer hard work and dedication of the players and the support team. So I’d like to thank them.

“We are also honoured to play in this tournament which encourages developing clubs to play rugby, while retaining a strong sense of camaraderie.”
