Harry Morley became the Plashet Park Bowls Club champion for the second year running on Monday, but he had to work hard to win an excellent final against Alan Hogwood.

The game was evenly-matched for the first eight ends, but it was Hogwood who made the first positive move as he picked up a three, followed by another two on the 11th to open up the lead.

Undeterred, Morley slowly clawed his way back and by the 18th it was all square at 15-15, only for Hogwood to sneak ahead once more by two shots.

However, it proved to be Morley who lasted the course better and he took the last two ends, grabbing five shots along the way to win 22-19 and be crowned as champion.

Plashet’s Cribbs Triples League campaign has certainly hit the buffers after two thumping defeats on consecutive days.

Wanstead were the first to arrive and win on all three rinks for maximum points.

The heaviest defeat came for Peter Chilkes and his team of A Bashir Patel and Ken Carter who were thumped 30-9 by Ralph Dearman and his crew.

The others were a little bit closer.

Ismail Umarji, Yusef Saeed and skip Morley were pipped 16-13 by John Pluck and his team, though they did pick up five on the last end, while Cliff Dye’s team of Moosa Patel and Frank Adams were always playing catch up against Terry Batchelor and eventually succumbed by 16-11.

That made the overall score a thumping 62-33 in favour of the visitors.

The following day’s clash against Poplar was a little closer as Plashet did manage to win on one of the rinks.

That came on Hogwood’s rink of Moosa Patel and Carter where they had to withstand a late Poplar fight back to win by 19-13.

The other two rinks were not so successful.

Morley and his team of A Bashir Patel and Frank Adams managed another five count towards the end of their game, but that merely made the score a more respectable 25-12 by the end. While Umarji, Saeed and skip Chilkes were well in their game until a telling five-count went against them and they finished 22-15 down.

Poplar won overall by 60-47 and took all six points on offer.
