London Lions slipped to defeat at reigning champions Leicester Riders who leap-frogged the capital club into fourth place in the British Basketball League Championship standings.

Lions took a first quarter lead and forced Leicester to show all their quality as Anthony Downing’s 21 points paced the hosts against visiting captain Mike Martin’s personal tally of 20, but Riders took control from the second stanza and kept London at bay after that.

London signalled their intent in the first quarter by taking a 15-9 lead on two Rod Brown free throws.

A 9-0 Riders run put the home team 18-15 in front but London finished the opening session with an 11-2 burst, capped by an and-one from Adrien Sturt, to hold a 26-20 advantage.

Leicester tied the match at 26-26 on a Drew Sullivan three and then moved 29-26 ahead through Jamell Anderson before the Lions had scored a point in the second quarter.

Vince Macaulay’s Lions didn’t wilt and were ahead 39-36 on a Sturt triple before Riders put together a 9-2 run up to half time to lead 45-41.

Riders moved further clear as Jay Couisnard began to find his range. Heading into the final quarter they led 67-58.

Leicester controlled the fourth quarter with Couisnard and Sullivan combining to make it 80-63 and an Anderson three with just over a minute to playing making the match safe at 88-71.
