London Lions have added guard Ben Smith to their roster for the new season.
The 6’5” American has been a standout player with the Wichita State basketball team, leading them to an NIT Championship in 2011 and to the Missouri Valley Conference title in 2012.
The 23-year-old shooting guard brings a lot of versatility to the Lions’ team and was named defensive player of the year in his conference. He also averaged 10 points and four rebounds per game. Wichita went on to a 26 and 5 season.
Lions’ head coach Vince Macaulay said: “We’ve stated that defence is going to be key for us this season, Ben is a real defensive specialist going up against some top players in his college career, but he’s also a clutch player, has a great 40% record at the three point line and is used to stepping up in big games.”
Smith makes London his first stop in his professional career and is keen to get started.
He said: “I’m very happy for this opportunity, the Lions have achieved a lot in this past year and I’ve seen pictures of our home at the Copper Box Arena and can’t wait to meet the fans and get to work there.”
Smith joins Rod Brown, Nick Freer, Adrien Sturt and Joe Ikhinmwin on the Lions roster with more signings to follow. Player sponsorship is now available for Ben Smith on a first come first served basis.
Following the sell out game against Iowa University the Lions still have Early Bird Season ticket offers for the games including a FREE Varsity Jacket for fans who purchase these will remain on sale for another two weeks.
Tickets for all games have now gone on sale at ticketmaster.co.uk, with the first action being against the Manchester Giants on the 27th of September.
