BBL Championship: Durham Wildcats 83 London Lions 73
London Lions lost their 100 per cent British Basketball League Championship record as they lost 83-73 to Durham Wildcats yesterday.
The capital club started the season with wins over Manchester Giants and Plymouth Raiders but were unable to maintain their strong start as the Wildcats recovered from their opening-weekend loss against the Newcastle Eagles.
The Lions reduced a third quarter 20 point deficit to just two with 66 seconds remaining but the hosts held their nerve late in the final stanza where an 8-0 run saw them to victory.
The visitors were slow out of the blocks and saw Durham register eight unanswered points which extended to 16-3 before London shut them out and a Rod Brown three-point field goal edged his side 19-18 in front.
But the Wildcats recovered to lead 23-22 at the first break, and Mike Allison, Durham’s top scorer with 22, delivered 14 points to again lead by just a solitary point at half time (41-40).
The north-east outfit then gave themselves a cushion with a run that took the score to 69-49.
A London three-pointer before the buzzer swung the momentum their way in the fourth period and Julius Joseph split two free throws to drag the Lions to 75-73.
But Ralph Bucci and Allison broke the resistance late on to hand London their first taste of defeat this term.
Adrien Sturt finished as the visitors’ top scorer with 18, one ahead of Brown and they will now return to their new home of the Copper Box on Thursday to face Worcester Wolves.
