Basketball programme to launch later this year

London Lions have announced a new partnership with Epping Forest College to provide a new Education and Basketball Development Programme.

Epping Forest College will run the programme, which is designed for anyone looking to embark on a career in the sports industry; primarily in coaching, training or sports development; giving valuable experience and insight into developing and supporting elite performance.

Students joining the new Level 3 BTEC course will benefit from an elite standard of professional basketball coaching delivered by the London Lions’ players and coaching staff.

Phil Hall, vice principal at the College, said: “We are delighted to be offering the only sports programme in London, delivered in partnership with a professional basketball team – this is a unique opportunity for any aspiring basketball player, coach or sport professional.”

London Lions were launched as the only professional basketball club in London for the 2012–13 season and use the Copper Box, originally built for the 2012 London Olympic Games, as its home venue.

Students on our basketball course will have the exciting opportunity to train and play at this state-of-the-art venue, and be involved in league and cup competition.

Lions’ chief executive Vince Macaulay added: “This is a great step for us, it is important that we create as many pathways as possible for young people to follow their dream for basketball whilst gaining an education.

“Having Epping Forest College become another partner of ours expands those opportunities for young people.”

The London Lions Academy at Epping Forest will be holding trials for the course throughout the summer.

The first trial is at the Copper Box Arena on Tuesday July 28 from 12-2pm.
