The south London duo of Martyn Rooney and Conrad Williams have both progressed into Sunday’s 400m semi-finals after qualifying from their heats this morning.
Williams, who grew up in Lewisham, faced stiff competition from LaShawn Merritt in heat six – but the world No1 Merritt pulled up after 150m, allowing Williams to finish third and seal a place in the semi-finals.
Williams said: “It was good, I was so glad to be out there and I have waited years for this moment. I was calm, I stuck to my game plan and came through. The crowd delivered and I have to thank them for that.”
Rooney, who started his athletics career with Croydon Harriers and finished sixth at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, came second in heat seven in 45.36 seconds.
He said: “That was rusty – I’m disappointed with that, but I got through.”
Mark Pettini kept his cool to see Essex to their second LV= County Championship Division Two victory of the season by beating Glamorgan by five wickets with seven balls to spare at Cardiff.
