2008 gold medalists Hunter and Purchase hold off New Zealand to win heat
Romford’s Mark Hunter and partner Zac Purchase are through to the semi-finals of the men’s lightweight double sculls semi-final following their heat victory at Eton Dorney this morning.
The duo, who won gold in the same event in Beijing in 2008, have endured mixed form this season, but managed to hold off the threat of New Zealand by half a length, to win in a time of six minutes and 32.29 seconds.
From the very start, Hunter and Purchase took the lead, rowing hard to take a half-a-length lead after the first 500m.
The British pair remained in front for the rest of the race, despite being pushed in the final 250m by their Kiwi counterparts, with the capacity home crowd cheering them on.
Hunter and Purchase will next be in action on Thursday, in their semi-final.
