Louise Hazel ended the first day in 34th place in the heptathlon – but ended the evening on a high after winning her 200m heat.

Hazel, who was born in Southwark, was eclipsed by her GB team-mates Jessica Ennis and Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who currently lie first and 14th respectively.

The 26-year-old lay 37th out of the 38 participants after her first three events – the 100m hurdles, high jump and shot put.

She was particularly disappointed with her efforts in the high jump, only managing to clear 1.59m.

However, she finished the day by winning her 200m heat in 24.48 seconds, beating the defending Olympic champion Natallia Dobrynka in the process.

Hazel said: “My hurdles effort was solid but the high jump turned into a disaster. Only getting 1.59m was a total shocker.

“I redeemed myself with a good shot that had my coach smiling again and obviously the 200m showed I’m a fighter.

“That’s the beauty of my event. You get the chance to prove yourself event by event and I’m hoping for a good day on Saturday.”

Hazel, Ennis and Johnson-Thompson will compete in the long jump, javelin and 800m tomorrow.
