Olympic swimming: Daniel Fogg has hailed his home support for helping to keep his medal bid alive
Daniel Fogg has qualified for Saturday’s final of the 1,500m freestyle in fifth place after the home crowd cheered him home in an impressive time of 14 minutes 58.12 seconds.
The 24-year-old, who grew up in north London and was a Waltham Forest Gators swim club youngster, said: “I’m really happy with that, especially considering it was a morning swim and to finish second in the heat was great.
“I’ve done lots of preparation for today and the crowd definitely helped me to get under 15 minutes.
“They were great and it’s not often that a swimmer can hear the crowd while they’re competing and coming down the last 200m that helped a lot. Just to get to the Olympics was a dream come true, so to push on and make a final is unbelievable.”
Elsewhere at the Aquatics centre, Team GB’s women’s 4 x 100m medley relay quartet of Gemma Spofforth, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, Jemma Lowe and Amy and the men’s 4x100m medley relay quartet of Liam Tancock, Craig Benson, Michael Rock and Adam Brown both qualified for their respective finals.
Fran Halsall qualified for tonight’s 50m freestyle semi-final.
