London Lions have swooped to sign this year’s British Basketball League MVP, Zaire Taylor, after the guard labelled Worcester Wolves contract offer “insulting”.

The American joins Vince Macaulay’s side after playing a leading part in winning the BBL Trophy for the Worcester Wolves and was scintillating in capturing the play-off crown last month in the showpiece final at Wembley.

The guard was the MVP of that match as well as being voted the league’s MVP for a season that saw him average 19 points per game and a league leading 7.1 assists and grab 4.5 rebounds.

Taylor told Basketballmag.co.uk: “The offer the team offered was honestly insulting. Out of every team that offered me Worcester’s offer was by far the lowest.

“After all the team and individual success I had last season that’s the team making it clear they don’t want me back. Or they don’t value what I bring to the table.

“Vince contacted me and in a matter of days we came to terms. He also seems to have similar goals and a desire to make the BBL better as well as his club.”

In the year previous, Taylor starred in Leicester Riders’ treble-winning 2012/13 BBL campaign in which they won the BBL Championship, BBL Cup and the season-finale BBL Championship Play-offs.

“I think Zaire is a special kind of player,” said Lions head coach Macaulay, “He pushes the boundaries wherever he is on and off the court, he has a desire to be the best but also urging the best from his team mates, he’s the kind of character we need in London to propel our game into the same echelons as the major sports going on in our city.”

The 6ft 4ins Taylor, who graduated from Missouri University in 2010, averaged 48 per cent from the floor last term.

Macaulay added: “The Copper Box is a great place to watch pro basketball in London, we want to put a great team on the floor and Zaire is just the first piece, our fans are going to get great value from their season tickets as we provide exciting basketball in a big setting.”

•The Lions will launch the season with a pre-season international friendly on the September 6 before the regular season starts later that month. Special offer Season tickets are available throughout June before game day prices apply.
