Paralympic table tennis star Jane Campbell is celebrating her bronze medal by going back to work

Newham-based Jane Campbell produced a stunning fight back to join British table tennis’ medal party at London 2012 – but she is expecting to wake up and realise it is all a dream.

Campbell began her maiden Paralympics with the class 3 singles competition where she won both her group games, before losing to Sweden’s Anna-Carin Ahlquist in the quarter-finals.

The 44-year-old enjoyed four days rest before returning to the ExCeL for the class 1-3 team competition, where she partnered Sara Head who finished fourth in the singles.

It appeared as if they wouldn’t get past the first round after their opponents Turkey quickly went 2-0 up, however, Campbell and Head roared back to win 3-2 before losing to Korea in the semis.

In the bronze medal match they had to call on their character once again as this time Italy went 2-0 ahead and, having turned the game around to win 3-2, Campbell couldn’t quite believe it.

“There were so many mixed emotions from thinking we were out and that was it, to the fight back that Sara put up,” said Campbell, who trains at Newham Leisure Centre.

“I just thought after that, I am not going to give up either and we just got better and better.

“It means the world to me, there is no way of explaining it. You dream and hope and then when you actually achieve it, it doesn’t seem real.”

Campbell and Head’s bronze medal came moments after the British class 6-8 team of Will Bayley, Ross Wilson and Aaron McKibbin had also won bronze and was the host nations’ fourth medal in total.

Bayley claimed class 7 singles silver and Paul Davies bronze in the class 1 but, rather than get carried away, Campbell admits it is back to work – not that she’s complaining.

“I am going back to work, I have got amazing colleagues and I do love my job so it is not a problem,” she added.

“I work in market research and I will be taking my medal back in, I am sure they would love to see it.”
