A look ahead to the final eight of the World Cup

So we’ve reached the last eight of the World Cup, and you can only hope that the drama and excitement continues.

We’ve seen 22 days of fantastic football that will go down as one of the best, if not the best World Cup for some time.

And as we prepare for the final nine days of the tournament, it’s time for the big sides to finally arrive.

This has been a spectacle full of surprises and shocks along the way, but most of the much-fancied sides are still in with a shout.

The likes of Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, Holland are joined by the ‘dark horses’ of Belgium and the surprise packages of Costa Rica and Colombia.

And it’s the latter who could cause the surprise of all surprises if they were to beat the host nation and everyone’s favourites.

James Rodriguez has been the star of the show and if he could make just one more fine showing then he would become the most hated figure in Brazil.

But in truth this tournament is wide open and no side has yet performed well on a consistent basis.

Brazil haven’t looked like world beaters, Belgium have had to rely on plenty of late heroics, while the likes of Germany have also been susceptible at the back – just look at what damage Algeria almost caused.

It took extra time for Argentina to see off Switzerland while there were more late goals for France in dispatching Nigeria, and Holland had to come from behind to see off Mexico.

And we are forgetting about Costa Rica They surprised everyone by topping a group which had England, Uruguay and Italy.

They have been a breath of fresh air and while there are not too many household names they are certainly a team willing to put their heart on the line for their country.

The one thing that has been predictable about the World Cup is that it’s unpredictable, and whoever ends up winning the tournament I am sure we will be in for a cracking finale.
