Former Hammers hero looks back on three wins in a week and if it better to win FA Cup or finish in the top four

What a week it has been for West Ham! It is unusual for us to get three wins and nine points, but I’m so pleased for the fans. I always say our supporters are long suffering and it has been great to see them have smiles on their faces this season.

It was a brilliant night against Tottenham, I went to the game and the atmosphere was fantastic and a throw-back to the old days. We were excellent in the first half and defended so well after the break. I never felt like Spurs would score, so it was another fantastic win.

At Everton it was a very strange match. As I was working, I was listening to it and when we were one down I was thinking ‘here we go again’ because we don’t have the best of records at Goodison Park.

But then they get a player sent off, but it goes 2-0 and they get a penalty and you’re wondering what is going on. It was quite obvious the penalty save was the turning point and even if Adrian was three yards off his line, it was a wonderful stop!

It was great character from the lads to get that come from behind victory. So many West Ham teams in the past wouldn’t have been able to do that and I’m as guilty as any because I’ve played in sides that would have struggled if we were two down so it shows the spirit of the current squad.

Now we go to Old Trafford full of confidence and importantly we don’t have any midweek match to worry about. I’m travelling up for the game and hopefully I’ll be cheering us on as we claim a semi-final place at Wembley that is waiting for us.

Our away form has been excellent and we drew 0-0 with them before, so there is no reason why we can’t do well again on Sunday. Our results over the last week have brought up the question of would we rather finish in the top four or win the FA Cup?

If we were to finish fourth, we would still have to qualify for the Champions League at the start of next season. It would be an incredible achievement for West Ham in the modern era to do that.

But with the FA Cup you get the memories from the day out as well as the winners’ medal. It’s a difficult question. In my day the FA Cup was the be-all and end-all for players, but it has changed now.

I think if you probably sat all the squad down and asked them if they would rather win the FA Cup or finish in the top four, you would get an even split, but the main thing is that it is great for the fans to see the club doing so well.

Man United don’t concede too many goals at Old Trafford, but they don’t score a lot either so I’ll go for a 1-1 draw. We’ll go full of confidence and I don’t think we’ll lose the game, but we might have to progress after a replay. COYI!
