West Ham have been given another boost with the news that star defender Winston Reid should return to full training next week.

The 24-year-old New Zealand international centre half has not played since the beginning of November after injuring his ankle in training.

Since then his country suffered World Cup play-off heartbreak against Mexico, while the Hammers have also struggled in the Premier League.

But assistant boss Neil McDonald confirmed that things are looking good, both for Reid and for winger Ricardo Vaz Te, who has been out with a dislocated shoulder since October.

“Ricardo played half an hour in the development game on Friday and his knee was a little bit sore afterwards, so we will see how that develops, but the good news is that his shoulder is now fine, that is not an issue,” revealed McDonald.

“As for Winston, we are hoping that even by next week, he might start joining in training, so the people coming back from injury is great and after the Newcastle game we have everybody back from suspension as well, which will make us much stronger.”

The Hammers have been plagued by injuries to their top players this term, but it seems with the return of Andy Carroll last week, there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

“Let’s hope we are over the worst,” said McDonald. “Turning the corner, everybody is talking about turning the corner after Cardiff.

“But it is important to win games and the huge amount of confidence it will give us if we beat Newcastle and get back-to-back wins would be huge for everybody and hopefully that will push us onwards and upwards.”

Hammer of the Year Reid and Vaz Te are both being pencilled in to make the squad for the trip to Chelsea on January 29 if Tuesday’s Capital One Cup semi-final second leg clash with Manchester City at Upton Park comes too soon.
