West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has a call-back option on midfielder Jack Collison after he sent the player out on loan to Wigan Athletic this week.

The 24-year-old has struggled to establish himself in the team at Upton Park this season, starting just six Premier League games, but Allardyce insists that he can make a real difference to the Latics for the rest of the season.

“His consistent level hasn’t been quite as good as last season,” said Allardyce. “You build a bigger squad and greater demands come on the players that are already here and he needs to play some football.”

Collison is stepping into a team in superb form and with lots of big games to play this season.

“What better place to send him than to Uwe Rosler’s Wigan crusade to get into the play-offs and try and get promoted,” said the boss.

“Jack isn’t cup-tied, he’s not played in the FA Cup and they’ve got a massive semi-final against Arsenal he can play in.

“There is a call-back option on him for us if we need him.”

This is the second time this season that the Wales international has been sent out on loan after playing four games for Bournemouth in October which had a positive effect on the player.

“Jack got himself into our side when he came back from being at Bournemouth on loan and stayed in the side for a few games before his form dipped a little bit,” reflected Allardyce.

“It worked well at that specific time and now he hasn’t played any games for a while. Games are what he wants to play and he can enjoy his football at Wigan for the time being.”

Allardyce confirmed that no more of his senior players will be going out on loan before the end of the season, but he also suggested that the ones that have already gone out have not impressed at their clubs.

“None of my first-team players will be going out anywhere now,” he said. “Maybe fringe under-21 players who need some experience at first-team football somewhere would be something I would jump at the chance of letting them do.

“Unfortunately, some of the loan players we have got out at the moment haven’t found life as easy as they thought they might and they are not making as many first-team appearances from the start as we would have liked, but that shows how tough it is out there.”
