Castle disappears as Hammers look to update crest for Olympic Stadium move

West Ham have unveiled designs for a possible new badge following a website consultation with fans.

Thousands of supporters responded to a questionaire posted on the club’s official website and the results indicated that 77 per cent taking part were in favour of evolving the crest.

And with remarkable speed, the club have issued four different designs on the same theme with the traditional castle motif removed and the word London placed at the bottom.

West Ham are keen to modernise the badge and promote it’s London identity in time for them to move into the Olympic Stadium and this is what they have come up with for fans to vote on.

The club were quick to reassure fans that they will not be changing the name of the club, despite the word London being proposed for the crest and they also reiterated that any change will not go through without the consensus of West Ham fans.

The club said: “As the following variations show, the two shades do not apply to single colour versions of the crest, not to the traditional flayt crest, as would appear on the playing shirt.

“The proposed crest has been carefully designed to be adaptable with a variety of colour applications and will follow a colour palette that has represented the club’s historic colours since 1900.”

That means claret, blue and white and variations on that theme it would seem. But the club are still likely to receive a whole host of criticism regarding the change, as they did with the move to the Olympic Stadium.

The main findings of the survey were:

77 per cent are in favour of updating the crest.

98 per cent say the crossed Hammers is the most important.

86 per cent want the castle logo retired.

70 per cent want a cleaner and bolder typeface.

The majority of fans are happy to see the word London included on the crest, but not the Olympic Stadium.

So do West Ham fans have any say on whether a new badge is adopted? The club say a definite yes.

“The board have made it clear than any decision on the evolution of the crest will only be made with the fans’ support so the fans will absokutely make the ultimate decision.”
