West Ham defender: ‘We can give Chelsea the Blues if we play like we did against Manchester United’

Hammers defender Guy Demel is taking the positives out of Wednesday night’s unlucky 1-0 defeat by leaders Manchester United

West Ham defender Guy Demel insists they have the ability to beat Chelsea tomorrow (Saturday) after a battling, but ultimately fruitless display against Manchester United.

The full back (right) returned to the starting line-up at Old Trafford on Wednesday and though the team lost to a first-minute Robin van Persie goal, he was pleased with the performance.

“It wasn’t a great start, we conceded a goal too early and this caused us a problem, but I think our reaction was good afterwards,” said the 31-year-old Ivory Coast international.

“Defensively we played good. We had some chances, but we couldn’t put the ball into the net.

“There are a lot of positives to take from here and if we play like this against Chelsea and are more clever in front of goal, I think we might have the chance to win the game.”

Bold words from the right back, but it was certainly backed up by Wednesday’s performance as they had great chances to earn something from the game.

A far cry from Sunday’s demise at Tottenham.

“Against Spurs it was a derby game and we had a bad day, but to come back and play like this is positive for the next game,” reflected Demel.

“They were very worried. We couldn’t hear the fans so I think it is good, but we still lost the game, so it was a bit disappointing because I think we deserved maybe to get a positive result here.”

They probably did, but they now need to take that form into tomorrow’s clash with Chelsea.

“We play at home after two away games,” he said. “Chelsea are quite a similar team to Man United.

“We will have the support of our fans and we will push more forward. We are able to win the game against Chelsea and we are looking for that – we need the three points.”

New Blues boss Rafa Benitez has managed two goalless draws so far in his tenure, but is it a good time to play them?

Demel is non-committal: “I will be able to say afterwards,” he smiled.

“Some teams are harder to play with a new manager, so it is difficult to know – I will tell you after the game!”

Meanwhile, West Ham boss Sam Allardyce was in reflective mood after his side’s loss at Old Trafford.

“We’re disappointed,” he said. “You could argue that if we’d got a drubbing it would destroy the players’ confidence, but if you defend well as we have done, it maintains it.

“We played against chamions, Manchester City, had a goal disallowed and drew 0-0. Today we lost to a deflected goal.”
