Former Everton and Manchester United boss can’t wait to get started at West Ham

David Moyes. David Moyes.

It is fair to say that the news that David Moyes had become the new manager of West Ham United went down like a lead balloon.

The former Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland boss replaced the sacked Slaven Bilic on Tuesday morning and despite being hailed by the club and by some of his ex-players, the fans were distinctly underwhelmed.

Most West Ham supporters had been right behind Bilic since his arrival, but like a stale relationship with an old girlfriend, most knew that it was time to split up.

Bringing in the 54-year-old Scot is a big gamble. He did well at Everton for 11 years, but since then he has failed at Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland.

Like Bilic, he was not the first choice to take over the West Ham hotseat.

The Hammers approached six other bosses who are already in jobs, but none of them were prepared to come until the end of the season.

Moyes has signed a two-and-a-half year deal, but there is a break clause in that at the end of the season.

Hopefully, West Ham will not have to use it as it would mean that the team are likely to be in the Championship, just like his last club are now.

“I would like to welcome David to West Ham United,” said club chairman David Sullivan.

“We need somebody with experience, knowledge of the Premier League and the players in it, and we believe David is the right man to turn things around and get the best out of the players at the club.

“He is highly regarded and respected within the game, and will bring fresh ideas, organisation and enthusiasm.”

Organisation will be one of the key elements for Moyes as well as more discipline and fitter players for a squad that have lost their way and are underperforming so badly.

Moyes himself is looking forward to the new job.

“The focus is purely between now and the end of the season,” said the Scot. “The first thing is to win the next game and build from there.”

Moyes took training for the first time on Tuesday morning and with the international break he has a little time to prepare.

“It gives me a chance to get settled in and get to know how things work,” he said.

“I think we’ve got a good squad and at the moment they should be in a better position than they are and I believe they will be come the end of the season.”

There are unlikely to be as many days off, especially after defeats, while training is set to be a lot more intense.

Moyes will begin with a trip to Watford, while his first game at the London Stadium will be against Leicester City.

The fans will take some winning over as Sam Allardyce will testifty to, but a couple of quick wins will help his cause.

Moyes is already saying the right things though.

“West Ham supporters are a very passionate group, and we need them behind us,” he said.

“How do we do that? By building a successful team, with good players playing well, and that’s what we are aiming to do.”

It is a gamble, but changing any manager in the middle of a season is and at least Moyes knows the Premier League.
