Enner Valencia has spoken of his delight at joining West Ham and insists he could be fit enough to feature in their Premier League opener against Tottenham.

Valencia sealed a £12million move to Upton Park from Mexican side Pachuca after scoring three goals in three games for Ecuador at the World Cup.

Hammers co-chairman David Sullivan said on Thursday morning that Valencia wouldn’t be fit enough for their opening two games, but the 25-year-old is still hoping to make his bow when Spurs come to Upton Park on August 16.

“I’m training normally at the moment,” he said. “I’m training hard to get match fit. I couldn’t play for a couple of days after the World Cup and stopped for a while.

“I could still be all right for the first game of the season against Tottenham or possibly the second. I don’t know. It’s up to the manager.”

On his move to West Ham, he added: “I’m very happy to be part of this great club. I am hoping to do well and I’m going to try and do my best.

“It was massive for my career being able to score goals in the World Cup. After that, a lot of clubs showed an interest in me.

“Thanks to West Ham it happened here. Now I want to enjoy being here at West Ham.”

The east Londoners will be without Andy Carroll for the first few months of the season due to injury, and Valencia admits it is a shame that he’ll have to wait to play with the England international.

“It’s a shame he’s injured,” Valencia said. “He’s a fantastic player, I’ve watched him play a lot.

“I’m hoping to learn from him and play alongside him. Hopefully we can achieve great things at the club.”

Meanwhile, Sullivan has confirmed that the club are hoping to bring in another striker before the start of the season.
