Tony Cottee Column: That was FA Cup magic

Archant

There are many who say that the FA Cup is not the competition it was, but I defy anyone not to have been excited by Saturday’s thriller at Upton Park.

That for me, is what the FA Cup is all about and I was on the edge of my seat until the very last whistle. I really felt that West Ham deserved to win on the day.

I was absolutely gutted when United scored in injury time – gutted, but I can’t say too surprised.

When it comes to finishing there is simply no-one better than Robin van Persie. He is the best in the Premier League and that finish was just magnificent.

West Ham will go to Old Trafford with a fighting chance, but I can’t help but think that their chance to go through has gone.

It was great to see Joe Cole back in claret and blue on Saturday and his two crosses for the goals were magnificent.

I was away from the club for six years before returning, while Joe has been away for nearly 10, but he will have felt just like I did when I came back – it is like going home.

The spirit in the camp is so good at the moment, I don’t think Joe will have any problem fitting in and for me he is a great signing.

The jury is still out on Marouane Chamakh though, but he is a good addition to the squad as we are still short on forwards.

I can’t see him starting if Carlton Cole or Andy Carroll are fit though and he has a lot to prove to us Hammers on what he achieved at Arsenal.

* I’d. love to see David Beckham at Upton Park, but have to say that is a long shot having spoken to him before Saturday’s FA Cup clash.

I got the impression from speaking to Becks that the only club in England that he would sign for is Manchester United.

West Ham go to Sunderland on Saturday and it will be a chance for them to pit their wits against one of my old managers in Martin O’Neill.

It is always a tough game up there and O’Neill will have prepared them well, but I think it may be a good time to play them and I fancy us for a 1-1 draw.
