Hammers fans getting a feeling of déjà vu

Striker Andy Carroll is crocked again

Anyone getting that feeling of déjà vu? Once again with the new season merely weeks away Andy Carroll has broken down yet again and is looking at missing around half the season yet again.

Unfortunately for our big Geordie he is in danger of joining the ranks of Benni McCarthy, Kieron Dyer and Freddie Ljungberg as the worst signings in the history of West Ham United.

Last season when Carroll broke down we played striker light formations and had to rely on Modibo Maiga, Carlton Cole and Mladen Petric (remember him?) to fill in for the majority of the campaign and surprise, surprise we struggled, With Carlton the only striker of the aforementioned to score on any kind of consistent basis.

Maiga’s winner at White Hart Lane was the highlight of his campaign and as for Petric...well I’d be surprised if his name was even uttered once on the end of season DVD.

At least this time around the club can call upon Mauro Zarate a striker with 19 goals to his name last season and when the world’s longest work permit hearing finally concludes, Enner Valencia, who scored only one less than his South American compadre. So yes we’re all frustrated with yet another injury to Carroll but at least we’re in far better position this season to deal with it.

I still feel there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the ensuing campaign; the objectives before the season started were a top 10 finish, improved style of football and a decent cup run or two; without Carroll’s services these objectives are still within our remit, in fact without Andy’s 6 ft 4 inch frame to hit the team will be forced to play more intricate/expansive football to create chances for Valencia and Zarate.

The fans have so far been impressed with the swiftness and efficiency of the club’s dealing this summer and the club must now show the same kind of determination in securing a replacement for our crocked number nine.

The signing of Andy Carroll thus far has been a complete and utter disaster, we’re not Chelsea a club that can sign Romelu Lukaku for 18 odd million and just afford to loan him out here, there and everywhere, When West Ham United spend 15 million on a striker and give him massive wages we need him on the pitch week in, week out scoring goals and so far since his permanent move from Liverpool, Andy Carroll has only played in 16 games – simply not good enough.

When Carroll signed there was sense that perhaps we’d finally replaced the gaping hole left by Dean Ashton’s retirement...unfortunately it looks like history is repeating itself yet again.
