Orient fans are the most long-suffering in London according to a new study.

They pip supporters of AFC Wimbledon and Dagenham & Redbridge to the dubious award.

Figures have been compiled by statisticians at the English National Football Archives (ENFA) to create the “Suffering Index” to mark the 125th anniversary of the Football League.

Orient came ninth overall. In their first season in the Football League, they finished rock bottom of Division Two.

The club has enjoyed just one season of top flight football in its 133 history - the 1962/63 campaign.

But the O’s finished 10 points adrift at the bottom of the league and are yet to return to English football’s top table.

The study was commissioned by Warren United, a new animated ITV4 sitcom which airs next week about a diehard fan of a perennially struggling football club.

It ranked the 92 league clubs by success (or lack of it) which was weighted by other factors including their average size of home crowd.

The show’s Simon Nye said: “Orient fans have followed their club through thin and thinner.

“They are true fans.”

The findings have coincided with one of Orient’s best seasons in recent memory as Russell Slade’s men look to return to the second tier of English football for the first time since 1982.

According to the survey, fans of League Two outfit Rochdale are the most long-suffering nationwide.
