The 29-year-old knows O’s performance on Saturday against Scunthorpe United wasn’t good enough.

Leyton Orient defender Gary Sawyer admits supporters of the club deserve an apology after their disappointing 4-1 home defeat to Scunthorpe United on Saturday.

First half goals from Liam O’Neil and Gary McSheffrey put the Iron in command, before a Tom Hopper second half double either side of Darius Henderson’s penalty.

Many fans had left the ground early, while others vented their anger at the full-time whistle with a chorus of boos, and Sawyer believes they have every right to considering the performance they had just witnessed.

“We understand their frustrations and we are as frustrated as they are,” said Sawyer.

“I don’t want anyone to think we don’t care. All our boys wear their heart on their sleeve and we know that’s not good enough.

“We will be the first ones to admit that and they do deserve an apology.

“I think they have got every right to get out of their seats and leave. They are the ones paying to see it and it isn’t good enough. We know that and we need to put that right.”

He added: “We are all angry, and not one of our lads in the dressing room has their head held high. Everyone has their head down and everyone wants to put it right. We are angry with each other and angry with everything.

Manager Fabio Liverani also launched a scathing attack on his players, saying the team lacked guts, heart and courage after the defeat.

And while the 29-year-old believes the criticism is stinging, he feels it is fully deserved.

“It is damning,” he added. “We have got a good group of boys in that dressing room and everyone is going to fight to get ourselves out of that.

“We deserve that sort of criticism that has come our way. The game wasn’t good enough.”
