Leyton Orient goalkeeper Charlie Grainger has been called up to the England under-18 squad for the first time.

He is one of two stoppers chosen to face Croatia in two games at St George’s Park on March 1 and 3.

The other goalkeeper in the squad is Southend United’s Ted Smith.

Grainger, 17, has been part of the matchday squad for the O’s this season but is yet to play a senior game.

Orient manager Russell Slade said: “We’re really pleased for Charlie and it is a fantastic opportunity for him. I’m hope he grasps it with both hands.”

His views were echoed by academy director Andy Edwards who has worked closely with Grainger.

Edwards said he was ‘delighted’ for his ‘deserved’ call-up.

He added: “He’s shown an excellent attitude and really put the work in on the training ground with Kevin Dearden and the other coaches.

“We’ve got high hopes for him and I’m sure that the international experience will be one he relishes and will make him a better player.

“It’s great for the academy as a whole too as not only does it give them something to aspire too but also that it sends a message out, that the Orient academy is a great choice for young players who wish to progress and become top class players.”
