Leyton Orient boss ‘Winston’ Slade only has eyes on the Championship

Leyton Orient may have the small matter of the League One play-offs in the not to distant future, but boss Russell Slade is so confident his side can enjoy a day out at Wembley, that he’s already planning for the Championship.

The O’s picked up their second win in nine games last weekend with a 2-0 home success over Tranmere Rovers, ahead of Saturday’s trip to MK Dons.

But while a two-legged play-off semi-final awaits, before a potential date at Wembley, Slade, accompanied by Winston Churchill, has plans in place for Championship football.

“Yes of course we are planning for the Championship, that’s the only thing in my mind is planning for that,” said Slade.

“We’ve even got a little poster up of Churchill – ‘We’ll do it together’. It’s like the little war room. It’s where I plan and plot, and it’s where I spend most of my life at the moment.”

Despite spending most of the season in the top-two before their recent run, in Slade’s eyes the O’s will be play-off underdogs.

The Professional Footballers Association (PFA) League One team of the year did not include one single Orient player in the XI.

And that may well give Slade and his Brisbane Road side an added incentive in securing promotion to the second tier.

“Churchill is someone you learn from and admire because like us, he was up against it so you take a lot from being in adversity and against the odds and we will be, but we’ll overcome it.”
