Kevin Nugent has reportedly been offered the position of head coach at Leyton Orient.

The 45-year-old was placed in caretaker charge of the O’s for their 3-2 loss to 10 man Rochdale on Saturday after Russell Slade resigned from the position last Wednesday.

And despite that result, it appears that Nugent is the frontrunner for the position after odds to become the next manager at Brisbane Road shortened to 1/4 this afternoon.

Nugent was set to speak to club owner Francesco Becchetti, chief executive Alessandro Angelieri and sporting director Mauro Milanese over the weekend about the position and they appear to have been positive, though there is no confirmation as of yet from the club.

Following Saturday’s home defeat Nugent confirmed a new head coach role was set to be created and said the opportunity to become O’s boss ‘excited’ him, having spent a number of years with the club as both a player and in the backroom staff.

“I am sure they’ll be people interested in this job. It will be fantastic job for someone so I am sure there will be people interested in it,” said Nugent, who played 157 games for the O’s in two spells.

“I’ve worked here a long time and I’ve done youth team, scouting, allsorts.

“They will probably change the role here to head coach. It is something that will certainly excite me but we’ll have to wait and see.”
