Jack Wilshere admits he uses England skipper Steven Gerrard as a role model after making his return to international action.

The Arsenal midfielder played alongside Gerrard for the first time and said: “I think any young English midfielder would look up to someone like him, especially his long passing, his vision, and everything.

“For me he is one of the best midfielders in the world, he still is, and he has been at the top of his game for eight to nine years.

“He is definitely someone to look up to and he is great to have around the squad.

“He talks to me, he talks to me on the pitch and it’s the first time I’ve played with him and it’s a pleasure to play with someone like that.”

Wilshere believes Gerrard is capable of playing into his middle to late 30s.

He said: “I think you can see he is naturally fit. He has got a good build and he is still getting through 12-13 kilometres a game.

“He’s box to box, and if you ask him to play 90 minutes or 120 minutes, as you saw in the European Championships, he can still do it.”
