Essex Senior League: Greenhouse 0 Newham 1

A late penalty from Daniel Crowie proved enough for Newham to record their second win in three league outings so far this season last night.

Crowie, sent off in the 6-0 derby thrashing at Clapton at the weekend, bounced back from his own personal disappointment to prove the matchwinner for Zakir Hussain’s men, after a scrapppy contest at Coles Lane.

Defences dominated in the opening exchanges, as both sides struggled to settle.

Newham’s best chance fell to Dominic Clarke, who saw his 25-yard effort saved by Raven Constable, after a good run by Jamal Nelson.

The home side went close just before the break when a winger cut inside and sent a curling left-footed effort just past the post.

And Newham’s Mark Richardson was the busier of the two keepers in the second period, tipping a top-corner bound effort round the upright on 67 minutes.

Greenhouse continued to create openings, to no avail, and Newham were given the chance to seal the points when they awarded a spot-kick eight minutes from time.

Substitute Crowie stepped up confidently and smashed the ball into the roof of the net to break the deadlock, then created a chance for a second soon after when his excellent through ball found Clarke, but his shot was well saved by Constable.

Paul Olujimi Oshin and Michael Akande shared the man of the match honours for Newham, who return to action on Saturday with a tough journey to Haringey before making a shorter trip to Mile End Stadium to take on local rivals Tower Hamlets next Wednesday.

Newham: Richardson, A Clarke, Bapu, Akande, Rothon, Nelson (Grant 67), Olujimi Oshin, Quinton, D Clarke, Darr (Crowie 57), Humphrey (Willis 70)

Unused substitutes: Mahmood, Cemal Agdelen.
